Debra loves color and texture, and working with fiber in various forms to create art is immensely satisfying, as it combines these elements so well. Her approach is usually spontaneous, sparked by something that intrigues her— the print of a fabric, the color mix of a garden, the shadows formed as light hits an object, the texture of a surface, an interesting juxtaposition of images, etc. Working this way allows Debra to consider ideas as they occur to her throughout the process and often changes the direction of the work as she goes. She sometimes includes unusual materials or objects in her work as an unexpected surprise for the viewer. She tries to stay open to change, explore new techniques, and continue to search out new skills that might better express her artistic vision.
