I'm a native Californian who's been living in Humboldt County for nearly 20 years. I've been a textile artist for 40 years. I create my own fabrics for art quilting using surface design techniques such as dyeing, painting, hand printing, discharging (releasing color) and digitally printing on commercial white and black fabric. Most of my quilted art cloth pieces use several handmade fabrics collaged together, while some work features wholecloth fabric that is beautiful enough to stand on its own as an art quilt. The finished fabrics dictate what they want to become as a quilt, rather than me attempting to tell a story or represent something in the material world. Some image, thought or feeling gets evoked in the making of each piece, and that's what the quilt becomes.
My work is largely about visual texture, the orchestration of pattern, color, line, shape and form. I am highly intrigued with the serendipitous patterns created with surface design techniques on fabric, and fascinated with overall graphic patterns that make a statement or have a bold presence. I am drawn to muted colors and asymmetrical shapes that evoke the organic natural world.
